How guna milan works

Ashtakoota matching compares the Moon positions of two people across eight kootas worth 1 to 8 points each, adding up to 36. Each koota looks at a different traditional quality, from temperament (gana) to health and lineage (nadi).

Some kootas are directional: varna, vashya and gana treat the groom's and bride's roles differently, so swapping the two can change the total.

We show the raw calculation separately from interpretation. A low score is information to discuss, not a verdict.

Common questions

What is a good guna milan score?

Traditionally, 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable. Many families also look at nadi and bhakoot separately. A score never predicts a marriage outcome.

Can I match by name only?

Yes. Choose “By name”. We use the traditional 108-syllable (namakshar) table to find the nakshatra and pada of each first syllable. It is approximate, so birth details are always preferred.

Why is my score 28.5 and not a whole number?

Tara gives 1.5 points per direction, and Vashya and Graha Maitri can give 0.5. Half points are normal and precise.

Is 18/36 enough?

Traditionally 18 is the minimum. Many families look at Nadi and Bhakoot first: an 18/36 with both clean is often preferred over a 27/36 with an uncancelled Nadi dosha.

Why does swapping groom and bride change the score?

Varna, vashya and gana are calculated directionally in the traditional system.
